10. Syndrome from The Incredibles
While Syndrome definitely checks off the diabolical box, his motivation is what makes him so fascinating. His desire to prove himself a superior hero even without powers and to create a world where no one has to feel inferior because they don't have powers is an admirable goal when you look at it. The way he goes about, however, is nowhere near admirable.

9. Lady Tremaine/ Evil Stepmother from Cinderella
Definitely the best part of this Disney Classic. The way in which she goes about making Cinderella's life a living hell makes her one of the most despicable film characters I have ever seen. Add to it that cold star and demeanor and you have the biggest bitch to ever grace the silver screen.

8. White Goodman from Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Ben Stiller is probably in his most hilarious role. Goodman is a dick in every sense of the word, but he's entertaining antics and over the top ego keep us wanting more. He's definitely a big part of why Dodgeball has become the cult hit it is today.

7. Joker from Batman
While Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning role as the iconic villain is considered by many to be the definitive portrayal, Jack Nicholson's take on the character remains my personal favorite. He's so great that he makes you laugh alongside him despite the fact that he's a homicidal maniac. That's how I like my Joker.

6. Noah Cross from Chinatown
The source of the corruption at work in Roman Polanski's Masterpiece. As we find out in the movie, Cross's evil goes well beyond his unethical means of going about his notorious scheme of acquiring more power. The fact that he wins, in the end, makes that evil all the more prominent. He is truly a capitalist monster.

5. John Fitzgerald from The Revenant
While DiCaprio walked away with the Oscar for his performance in The Revenant, Tom Hardy was just as effective in this Frontier Epic. Fitzgerald is a pure survivor looking out only for himself. He is willing to do almost anything if it means saving his own skin, no matter how cold-blooded. Hardy also adds dimension and depth to this character that makes him as fascinating as he is ruthless.

4. Sergent Barnes from Platoon
A Demoralized man who has been scarred both physically and emotionally. Barnes's time in the jungles of Vietnam has turned him into something truly terrifying. What makes it especially terrifying is that we know that deep down there is a man truly suffering. Barnes is a perfect example of the true horrors of war.

3. Amon Goeth from Schindler's List
Much like how Oscar Schindler showed us the very best in humanity, Goeth shows us humanity at its darkest. What makes Amon terrifying besides his horrific actions is the fact that the things he did were very real. His character is a powerful way of Speilberg telling us "Never again but Never Forget".

2. Little Bill Daggett from Unforgiven
The sheriff of the western town Big Whiskey, Little Bill's goal of dissolving his town of all gunslingers and bounty hunters is done with an iron fist and often with cruelty. Both intimidating and at times quite funny, Little Bill is a standout in a genre that has seen many memorable villains.

1. HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Oydeyessy
The Textbook definition of AI going too far, HAL is one of the most iconic figures of Science Fiction. HAL is a frightening look of what our future could hold if we aren't careful. HAL is just as menacing and interesting as anyone else on this list, and he does it with no facial expressions and a simple monotone voice, which is why he claims the top spot.
